Every year, the 24th January is celebrated as National Girl Child Day since 2009. On 24th January 1966, Smt. Indira Gandhi became first woman Prime Minister of India, therefore, 24th January was selected as National Girl Child Day to commemorate the event.
The objective of celebrating this day is to focus attention on the depleting female to male ratio (The child sex ratio in India in 2011 census for girls versus boys stood at 914:1000), and take a stand on issues of female foeticide, domestic violence and malnutrition in children.
